Superstition

Where do superstitions come from, and how do they develop over time? I'm sure the psycology behind it all would be quite enlightening for those who are interested in that sort of thing.
I'm not superstitious of walking under ladders or having a black cat cross my path. My superstitions are a bit more idiosyncratic...
1) I give all my family and friends a lucky penny whenever they fly anywhere. How do I pick the penny that's lucky, you ask? OK, let's pretend you ask. The answer: I deem it so. Usually, it's the person's birth year or a particular year that was good to them. Not really a science to it, but so far, the success rate is 100% for getting the people safely to their destination.
2) I avoid listening to Buddy Holly, Jim Croce, Richie Valens, and John Denver the day on which I fly anywhere, cuz I think it's a bad omen. On the day I was to fly from Austria to Switzerland last year, my friends and I went to have a nice breakfast at a nice hotel in the old part of Salzburg. After breakfast, as we walk out of the lobby, guess what plays? "La Bamba" by Ritchie Valens...How fucking arbitrary is that?! Here I am in a hotel in Austria and they happen to play this 45 year old song at the moment I leave the lobby, as opposed to a million other songs they could have played. Needless to say, that made me rather "uncomfortable" when I got on the flight. Nothing happened, of course. As far as I know, I'm still alive.
You might have guessed this already, but I am not a big fan of flying, even though I know perfectly well that it's safer than driving. I guess I've invented these little mind games for a little peace of mind. Like psychological crutches, I guess.

That's cool! Hope the flight was fun. I just had a friend fly from Orlando to San Diego, with a stop off at Dallas. I, for some odd reason, like airports, yet I can't stand flying.
