August 1 marks the Swiss national holiday, basically the Swiss version of the U.S.'s July 4. So, in my neck of the woods around Lake Geneva in the French part of the country, we would probably eat some sort of disgustingly rich melted cheese dish like Raclette or Fondue with family and friends. In the evening, each village would have a bonfire, so we'd probably go to one of those, and some of the bigger cities would have fireworks. You can see the bonfires in all the villages up and down the coast, if you have a good enough view.
More information than you ever wanted to know about Switzerland.
