Tempting time and fate

So, yesterday, I go to Target at 1030 in the morning with the intention of buying kitty litter. I go to grab one of the big 23 pounder from the shelf, and I as grab it off the shelf, the box breaks, leaving me to stare at the top of the box gripped tightly in my hand while the box falls to the ground. It landed flat and fell over, so thankfully the spill wasn't as bad as it could have been. I cleaned it up a bit and moved it to the side, and then I looked for a red and khaki clad target clad so that I could show him just how neatly the box broke and tell him where the spill was.
I made sure the mess the litter made wouldn't cause any damage, and left for the safe confines of home, not bothering to accomplish my errand. Any day that begins this is surely to go awry, so why press my luck? I'll keep the damage I inflict to a minumum, thanks.
On another note..."Find a penny, pick it up. All day long it brings good luck." I've picked up a crapload of pennies in my lifetime, yet I can't quite figure out how that habit has led to increased luck. I just don't see it. I found a nice shiny penny this evening while I was getting milk at the grocery store by my house, heads up no less. It was beckoning me to pick it up, with its new shininess and everything, but in my version of a big "F##k you" to fate, I left it where it was. If I tempt the hand of fate, it knows where to find me.
Also, another one of my little quirks is to say a wish and whatnot whenever I catch the clock at 11:11. I think I'll stop that, too. Me and time haven't been getting along all that well lately anyway.
