My sunday went along just like my intention to visit the Mark Twain house the summer: nothing came of it. I thought I might pack some things, but alas nada.
See, Jaws came on TV, and I just had to watch Jaws. And then I had to eat something. Twice. Kind of a shame, because i don't think we'll have too many more of those perfect days until next spring. Well, who knows ... maybe it'll be a mild winter (please oh please!) I did manage to make it to Princeton for a nice tea at Small World.
I took another car load of stuff over to the new place yesterday, and I'm going to try and take Friday afternoon off at work to move the big stuff over with the roommie and Mike. That means I'll have to get a-packing to have everything ready to haul away by friday. The big benefit is that I can be at the new place by this weekend!
I was watching all the news shows this morning and thinking how much bullshit all that useless punditry and conjecture really is.
I think I might be tired, but I could just be really bored.

All Bruce, baby
From J.:
A satellite radio network, Sirius, is apparently set to unveil a station that will focus entirely on Bruce and the E-Street Band.
All Boss, all the time?
Can you imagine so much Bruce in one place? I know one dude(my bro-in-law) that will probably go and get Sirius installed in his car just because of this news!

2000
A few days ago, the 2000th US soldier died in Iraq, and yesterday was a day of rememberance for them. The fact that even one US soldier had to die over there pisses me off, because this whole excursion was solely based on conjecture, half-truths, and outright lies.
However, I passed by a protest against the war yesterday in Princeton, and I saw on the news that quite a few happened in NYC, too. That kind of set me off, cuz those protests just seemed disingenuous and phony. First, don't even bother showing up if you weren't protesting two years ago. Second, it would be disastrous for us to leave now, considering the tenuous state of Iraq and especially considering what those freaks in Iran said yesterday: Iran Leader Calls for Israel's Destruction
Where does this leave me, a liberal dude who thought it was stupid to enter Iraq yet now thinks it's stupid to leave? Is it just as shortsighted to say "We have to leave now" than it is to say "Let's go liberate Iraq because they definetly have weapons of mass destruction."?
Mikey confused.

Yet another poll
Majority of Americans now feel Iraq war was wrong: poll
You believed wholeheartedly the lies the administration told you and called the people who pointed that out as unpatriotic.
You failed to elect a president who would have tried to get us out of the mess or at least point us in another direction, and then you criticized his service in Vietnam.
Now you think the war was wrong? Fuck off. You broke it, and now you have to pay for it.

Her one act of defiance put her in an esteemed place in American folklore. RIP.
Exhibit Encourages Guests to Play 'Imagine'
So, they stuck Johnny in a musuem. Apparently, you get to go up to a piano and play Imagine. I imagine one could theoretically play other songs, but that might be strictly verboten.
Once you leave the musuem, you can do a performance art tribute to Joni Mitchell by driving away in a Big Yellow Taxi.

Mark Twain
I was fully intent on going to the Mark Twain Musuem and House in Connecticut this summer, but I never did actually make it out there. Bummer.
But, I have just come upon a site with a whole bunch of Twain quotes here. These are some of my favorites:
Genius is timeless, I guess.
But, I have just come upon a site with a whole bunch of Twain quotes here. These are some of my favorites:
- Never put off until tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow.
- Only presidents, editors and people with tapeworms have the right to use the editorial 'we'.
- Denial ain't just a river in Egypt.
- "Everything human is pathetic. The secret source of humour itself is not joy but sorrow."
- "Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect."
- "The only reason why God created man is because he was disappointed with the monkey."
- "I have no race prejudices nor caste prejudices nor creed prejudices. All I care to know is that a man is a human being, and that is enough for me; he can't be any worse."
- "The report of my death was an exaggeration."
- "Man is the only animal that deals in that atrocity of atrocities, War. He is the only one that gathers his brethren about him and goes forth in cold blood and calm pulse to exterminate his kind. He is the only animal that for sordid wages will march out…and help to slaughter strangers of his own species who have done him no harm and with whom he has no quarrel. …And in the intervals between campaigns he washes the blood off his hands and works for 'the universal brotherhood of man' — with his mouth."
- "The loud little handful will shout for war. The pulpit will warily and cautiously protest at first…The great mass of the nation will rub its sleepy eyes, and will try to make out why there should be a war, and they will say earnestly and indignantly: 'It is unjust and dishonorable and there is no need for war.' Then the few will shout even louder…Before long you will see a curious thing: anti-war speakers will be stoned from the platform, and free speech will be strangled by hordes of furious men who still agree with the speakers but dare not admit it...Next, statesmen will invent cheap lies, putting blame upon the nation that is attacked, and every man will be glad of those conscience-soothing falsities, and will diligently study them, and refuse to examine any refutations of them; and thus he will by and by convince himself that the war is just, and will thank God for the better sleep he enjoys after this process of grotesque self-deception."
Genius is timeless, I guess.
Ghost Hunters
I feel myself slowly becoming addicted to Ghost Hunters on the Sci-Fi channel.
What's nice is that they are naturally skeptical and they approach their searches scientifically, which makes the findings that they do present a bit more believable.
The last episode I watched was when they went through the penitentiary featured in Shawshank Redemption and the Lizzie Borden house. They go through these with all these hi-tech electrical gadgets, such as voice recorders and heat sensors, so that they can documented proof of hauntings. In the case of this episode, some freaky things happened, but they weren't documented.
Plumbers by day — ghost hunters by night. This one-hour weekly docu-soap from the creator/executive producer of American Chopper follows a group of real-life paranormal researchers as they investigate haunted houses throughout the country, encountering every type of imaginable haunting.
Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson, plumbers by trade, head up TAPS — The Atlantic Paranormal Society — a group of intrepid souls who are far from the usual collection of bespectacled Ph.D.s. They're ordinary, everyday people — office managers, factory workers, teachers and even psychic-hotline gurus — with an interest in getting to the bottom of your otherworldly disturbances. Jason, Grant and their team of moonlighting ghost-hunters are our first and last defense against uninvited paranormal visitations. Tom Thayer and Craig Piligian of Pilgrim Films (American Chopper) are the executive producers.

Los Beatles
What else would one have to do with a life after they've been named entertainment icon of the century? Ringo is probably thinking, "Well, that's nice. (I'm the luckiest guy ever!)"

The roommate's band, mouth of wilson, will play at the legendary CBGB in New York tonight at 6pm. I would have loved to been able to make it, but it doesn't look like I will. So, rock on and savor the moment!

I'm really stoked that the beatles got five out of ten, and the final two! Plus, my #1 was the countdown's #1.
What a great few weeks it's been, and you gotta love a radio station that would drop almost everything to do this. XPN rocks, something fierce!! I am happy I am a member.
And Julian, sorry buddy, but Bruce came in at #4 with Born to Run.

Lennon on Rolling Stone

Lennon-Ono Photo Deemed Top Magazine Cover
On what would be the last day of his life, Lennon and Yoko Ono posed for Annie Liebowitz at their home in NYC's Dakota building for this photo. Lennon took off his clothes and curled up next to a clothed Yoko Ono. It would have been a great photo anyway, but it took on added meaning after some nut job killed him a few hours later just down the stairs. Rolling Stone put this photo on the cover, with nothing else. Quite poignant.
Can you believe that was almost 25 years ago? It's nice to know he's still remembered, as the Beatles got five albums in the top ten in XPN's countdown.
Rock on, brutha.

I was really surprised to see August and Everything After in the top 25. I like the Counting Crows, and this album was great, but how did it get so high? I guess it's one of the things that make a countdown like this, as voted on by xpn listeners, this interesting.
Also quite happy to see that Pet Sounds on the list. Beach Boys, represent!
My top 5 prediction:
5. Blood on the tracks
4. Revolver
3. Born to Run
2. Highway 61 revisited
1. Sgt. Pepper
A lot of people thing Born to Run will hit at 1, considering that Bruce is a native son to the listening public here. However, I'm gonna stick with Sgt. Pepper.

Apple
I am an Apple geek. Check out The Unofficial Apple Weblog for a whole bunch of useful info.
Also, Apple released a video iPod this week, and with it, they upgraded iTunes. Now, you can buy TV shows like Lost and Desparate Housewives the day after they air.
The video iPod has a video out jack that allows you to connect to a TV. So, I guess it can act like a portable dvd player. A really really small one.

From the inside
Here are some more pictures of my new place. I haven't had much of a chance to put anything in it yet, but give it time. I'm thinking of putting a UF banner or flag or something on the wall by the entrance. The thing that sold me was the attic. There are so many possibilities with the attic, but I'm also quite happy at the storage an attic affords. That means I don't have to have a whole bunch of useless crap in my room.
Lennon
I forgot to note it yesterday, but October 9th would have been John Lennon's 65th birthday. It would have been nice to have him around.

Sting is getting a whole bunch of his albums in the countdown...Happy to see Ray LaMontagne on there too. Considering it's his debut album that came out this year, that's a pretty good showing. I find it statistically interesting that two different albums from the same artist can get consecutive positions on the list.

Also, nice to see Smile on there. I'm sure Pet Sounds will be in the top25, if not in the top 10.
Man, this is a fun countdown!

Man, there are some classics on here. I see that Plastic Ono Band is on the list now at 369(seems like a fittting number for him). I kinda figured that that would go a bit higher, but I don't think that the albums in these sections are separated by that many votes.
I love a radio station that can just drop everything and do this. They'll be playing the top 25 albums in their entirity, so you just know it'll be a marathon of Beatles, Dylan, and Bruce. How cool is that?!

Leaving an impression on the walls
In a little over a month, I will be leaving my current rectangular dwelling for a new place in a small Jersey town called Hopewell. The new apartment is all about character and uniqueness, and it's the place I always wanted to have during college. So, I guess I'll be living my college dream several years after the fact. There are several restaurants, a bar, a pizza place, and a coffeeshop within walking distance, and I've never lived anywhere where I have the convenience of a downtown like that.
I've been at the current place six years, and there have been good times, certainly, but bad times as well. This new place will be a fresh start, kind of a big-scale "shifting of the furniture." I can leave all the bad stuff here.
It's been a rather good year, and this new place should make the next one pretty cool, too.
I'm wondering if this place is haunted?

Paul McCartney
The Beatles have been an influence on my life since I was single-digits old, so I couldn't beleive my luck when a friend said she had an extra ticket for sale to his concert, Sept. 30 at Madison Square Garden. When I got the ticket, I just stared at it, amazed that I would get to see Paul McCartney.
He didn't disappoint! He was on and hit every note, and the band was very tight. The drummer, Abe Laboriel, Jr., is just silly good, but everyone in that band was fantastic. They played 37 songs, with a good mix of Beatles, Wings, and solo stuff. He played a few off the new album, and I was very impressed. CAn't wait to listen to the whole thing.
I was just happy that i got to see a Beatle in person...It absolutely floored me when I saw him play. It was amazing. I couldn't help but get a bit misty when he was up there performing "Hey Jude."
I'm smiling about it now still.
If you want to see a setlist, check it out here. Also, check out the Paul McCartney Tour 2005 blog.

Maine
Last weekend, I drove up to Maine, as my brother-in-law had a retirement ceremony from the Navy. I have some photos here.
The drive up was easy, almost relaxing. The weekend was nice, and I had a good time hanging out with family and the kiddos. Sunday, we went apple picking, and those were some mighty fine apples!

Gators, erg
I knew the game was over early on. I watched it to see if they could make it less embarassing. They didn't, losng 31-3. Also, some gator dude managed to break alabama's star receiver's leg on an obvious passing interference penalty. Ok, it was a freak accident, but still. It looked just like joe theisman getting his leg broken. Disturbing. That's football for you. Alabama was plainly the better team. Florida showed how much of a lack of depth they have.
