Tears for eggs, please

Tears for Fears has redone their Web page to mark the release of their new album, Everybody Loves a Happy Ending, on sept. 14. Some of the songs I've heard are really good, so I'm looking forward to the release.
That's it for now.

Plastics

How's this for cool. Apple came out with a new iMac, and it's another home around as far as deisn goes. I'll have to check out the specs, but I think it's based on a G5 chip, so it's at least fast.

various bits

After doing 4 loads of laundry, I treated myself to a chicken parm sub from the place down the street. It's surprising, and alarming, that after 4 loads, i still have laundry left to do. I thought I would have been able to put a good dent into it.
A bird on the window sill tells me the republican convention is going on, as we speak. It coincides, coincidently, with a vow I've made not to think or do anything regarding politics, and I'm actually sticking to it quite well! No temptations as of yet.
I imagine that they have designated the area between 6th and 8th aves. and 31st to 34th streets as irony-free zones. That means that republicans can safely grab a slice of pizza at the sbarro's across penn station without being bombarded by those hipster folks with trucker hats, or anyone who uses sarcasm as a form of communication. But then again, what self-respecting hipster would ever go to Sbarro's, except, of course, ironically.

man, that went by fast

The weekend was pretty full.
When I learned that my brother was moving to New Jersey, going to the car show in somerville was one of the things that I imagines we'd be able to do together. So, i was happy that we were able to work it out. We all met at Chris's work and then drove downtown. The weather on this friday, for the first time, was good, so there was a pretty strong showing of classic cars. I think they were all surprised at how many cars actually showed up for this thing. We did a nice tour, and Chris and I slobbered over some immaculate SS Camaro convertibles. They also had a mustang cobra gt500 with chrome that you can see your reflection. I think the kids enjoyed it for the most part, but I don't know if they quite have the car bug just yet. I guess this means that I'll have to get to work on them.
On Saturday, I took an early train into to city to meet up with the padre. The heat in the city was just nuts .. I only walked 5 blocks and i was already sweaty. I met up with him at the new hotel, and man, is that place swanky! I guess it would have to be considering where it is. We grabbed a quick bite at a mexican place and proceeded to eat too much. We also met up with some family friends, and then later walked down Bloomingdales and further still to 57 and 8th. As is a necessity with any trip to NY, we grabbed slices of pizza on the way home.
I left there really early this morning to ensure that I could be at work on time. F.C.G. and I still haven't spoken and it;s been three weeks since i asked her. I don't have any hard feelings, so I'd like to be at least friendly. However, I get a vibe from her that's not the least bit welcoming(it seems to me she tries not to be where i am, as well) so I'm not inclined to break through it. I guess I should take the initiative and do that, but honestly, I don't know how much I really care. I feel pretty good about myself at the moment, and I might want to spend my time and energy elsewhere.
You know, I actually have more to say on the hotel, and the fact that my parents get to stay in a place right across from the Met, but I'm a bit sleepy, so maybe later.

A quick 5

Q: What's in your CD player right now?
A: Neil Young Unplugged in the car, Garden State at home.

Q: What's up for the weekend?
A: Going to Somerville for the car show tonight, New York to see the hotel and visit padre, and work(pre-scheduled boredom) on Sunday.

Q: What's your favorite quote this week?
A: "I don't know, I don't care, and it doesn't make any difference." - Keruoac

Q: Really?
A: Yes.

Q: Why are you having such a hard time thinking of a fifth question?
A: Well, it's the middle of the day, I just ate lunch, I'm being kept down by the man, I missed Elvis's birthday, I found another white hair, monkeys are being funny somewhere, and we're being attacked by locusts. You know, the common reasons.

half the time I'm gone, don't know where

Every now and again, I get the urge to hop in my car and explore. I point the car in a general direction and turn when the desire strikes.
Today's adventure started on 206 south with the intention of going to trenton. I wanted to go all the way to 29 so that i could go north to lambertville. 206 is really nice going to lawrenceville. You go over 95 and you're in this cool little neighborhood with original homes. Then, you go through a traffic circle, and it gets a bit dicey. There's quite a bit of potential; the architecture is great, and the design of the homes promote community, as the front porches face the street and act as gathering spots. However, it's like a vacuum. I imagine that that place will always be the same somehow, and that it just sucks things in and keeps them in. There are some revitalization projects going on, and I think that it might be cool to live there. At least it might be somewhat more interesting that living in plainsboro. Maybe not as safe, but there are trade-offs in everything.
I'd like to explore the Trenton area a bit more, as it may be fun. I can only go into princeton so often before i lose interest.

8.25.2004

bored

I'm taking my computer out for another spin on the town. However, they are starting to clean up, which is kind of a hint. I finally worked on the resume, but I need to delete some stuff to bring down to the one-page standard. I'm gonna try something new. Everyday, I will ask myself 5 questions that I need to answer. This is just to spur me to write something...to get in the habit of writing on the computer. When I say that, it sounds that I'm actually in the habit of writing, but elsewhere. ok, so let me rephrase....to get in the habit of writing.
Since they are cleaning around me, I'll start later.

8.23.2004

evil, but not too evil

I got me a copy of the Garden State soundtrack, which I picked up at the Princeton Record Exchange, because our favorite book and music store has sold out. That's ok; I was able to give some money to a local store rather than the "community-destroying, soulless" chain store. The folks behind the counter probably wouldn't set in foot in the store, unless they had to do it ironically. Doing a bookstore like wearing a trucker hat.
Back to soundtrack...I have decided i really dig The Shins, so I will have to listen to the roommate's collection. Ithink i caught the boat late on them. Actually, I think I have to swim after it, but anyway, they rock. The movie has a perfect use of a Simon and Garfunkel song too, during arguably the best scene in the movie. It really deserves a second viewing.
On a completely unrelated note, I have a friend who is trying Pre-dating. I'm guessing it's like speed dating. You besically get 6 minutes to chat with someone, and then you go on to the next one. I don't really care for the bar scene, and sitting in a coffee shop, reading a book and listening to the ipod doesn't seem to start as many conversations as you'd think, (kidding.) so I may have to do this. I can pretend to be socially outgoing for at least a few hours, right.
I might also start on that eharmony thing. I'm still kind of hesitant about internet dating, but considering my dislike for bars and such, I may have to wake up to reality.
Man,I am all over the place. Check out the Garden State web site. Zach's got a blog.

The laptop is on a field trip

I have a really cool laptop, yet I don't take it out very often. But alas, here I am at the Princeton Panera making use of their free wireless internet. It's not the fastest, but hey, it's free. I guess I'm just paranoid about spilling something on it.
This goes on the list of things i like, along with monkeys, ducks on TV, and the word "dude": opening up your work email on a monday morning and finding a nice email from someone you haven't heard from for a while. That's a pretty cool way to start a monday.

I'm like a bird

I don't usually care about viruses, but this story was just begging me to make a comment about it:

Bird flu in pigs may signal pandemic. Mad Cow virus jealous that it didn't get there first.
Now that that's done, I got my haircut last friday by someone who was in the middle of some sort of nervous breakdown. Note to self: scissors in the hands of someone who has a nervous breakdown should be categorized as a new fear...something best to avoid.
I knew i was in for fun when the haircutress gave the hostess a look of pure evil for giving her another person's hair to cut. She was rude from the get go, and after i told her what i wanted, she proceeded like a robot. She complained to another lady how shortstaffed they were, how she was burned out, etc. Then, she started mumbling that her hands were swollen from 20 years of doing this, and again, how burned out she was. All the while, she was giving me orders, like "head down," "move to the left," etc. Who was I to argue; she had the scissor!
She basically disregarded what I wanted and gave me a haircut I didn't want. When she was finished, she said "Is it ok? You're done. You can go." She threw her comb back to her workstation, and stormed off to the back, saying that she was burned out.
I was like "what the fuck was that?" I grabbed my glasses, and was actually considering walking out without paying, as I was rather livid. I get up to the desk and they said that since it was my 9th haircut, it was free. Yeah, ok.

8.20.2004

I know you, I knew you

Went in to Princeton to see Garden State. I enjoyed it, for them most part. There were some parts that were just a bit cloying, but i think the good stuff far outweighed the bad. Plus, it had a killer soundtrack, so I'll have to pick it up some time this weekend.
I think I may not have passed an interactional pop quiz last night. I guess since we live in a world of coincidence and fate or whatever, there is always a small probability that you may bump into someone that you have known at one point or another. The real test lies in remembering the person's name in the two or three seconds that you have to make contact. Actually, I think it came to me just now! Liz!
Anyway, I didn't remember that last night. I remembered that we worked together at the store, and that she went off to Crete for the summer. I think I even have a postcard lying about somewhere.
The conversation was short, perhaps shorter than i would have liked it to be. I couldn't keep up the conversation past the quick pleasantries because i must paniced from not remembering her name. I felt like a bit of a punk.
Oh well...I'll have to be more on the ball the next time around.

8.17.2004

Not my cup of meat

The title has new nothing to do with the post, but Dylan just sprung up in my head.
I'm thinking of getting a messenger bag from Timbuk2 with a red blue red color combo. I have a computer bag already, but I want something I can put more stuff in. It would be my everyday work bag, and I'll use my computer bag if i take my computer somewhere.
I just ate a TV dinner, and the last cooking direction was "stir and enjoy." I love the fact that you are actually directed to enjoy your dinner. I guess if they didn't write it down, it wouldn't have occured to the masses to actually like their dinner.
Damn food fascists.
I'm looking forward to seeing Garden State sometime this week. Actually, I think residents of New Jersey are actually mandated to see this, much like you are given a copy of "Born to Run" when you move here.

Random notes from a Monday

I tried to kill a little time today, but time is apparently a resilient little biyatch.

  • Went to the Princeton Record Exchange, specifically to find a used copy of the "Lost in Translation" soundtrack. I hear you saying, "But Michael, you work at a store that sells a whole bunch of music which gets you a great discount." Good point, but it's fun poking around at the used record shop, and I get to pretend to be an ubercool kid for a bit. Plus, if it's raining on 930 on a tuesday, I'm almost living out "Brian Wilson" by Barenaked Ladies.
While there, looking through the bargain stuff, I noticed at least 3 instances of bands using a time as an album name. How clever.
  • It's raining again. Holy crap, will it stop already?
  • I don't think there's a lonelier or more depressing place than a 24-hr supermarket at 3 am. It's so quiet, you can hear the fluorescent lights hum. And the people that are shopping are half awake, and you can only imagine how much the employees want to be there at that time. Overall, I imagine that this is what it's like to be in a coma: all the lights are on and the music's playing, but there's no one home.
  • I don't really enjoy beer, but if you drink it really fast, you can't really taste it. Knowing this will make it considerable less expensive when I go to bars the next time around. Those white russians and rum and cokes at 8 bucks a pop add up after a while. Plus, I won't want to be mixing different types of alcohol, for fear of getting sick.
  • I heard that Wes Borland has returned to the Limp Bizkit fold. I am so excited, I can almost feel my hair grow. I am shivering with antic-
  • ipation.

So, that's it for now. I'm tired, and I have to conjure up a new illusion built upon a different fortune cookie fortune.

Another sunday

Been another busy weekend. Drove up to the Poconos on Friday night, and then we headed over to my brother's house for another birthday.
Just came back from the working at the bookstore. The girl I asked out and I work the same schedule on Sunday, but I don't think we made eye contact once. Actually, I don't think we were in the same area at the same time. Also, she may have swtiched over some parts of the schedule so that she wouldn't have to come up to the register.
If I thought it would be awkward like this, I wouldn't have ventured in asking her. It's really not that big a deal, and I hope that we can still be friendly.

8.13.2004

Perspective! I've been looking for you.

While I was whining about the girl last night, a friend I was chatting with, who lives in Tampa, reminded me of a hurricane that was barreling toward the bay. So, that kind of puts a perspective on things, doesn't it?
Anyway, Javi, I told you I'd wake up better today. Hope that everyone is safe in your neck of the woods.

8.12.2004

Now thursday sucks as bad monday

Asked that girl i liked for ages out for coffee, finally.
However, she is apparently seeing someone at the moment. This is a bit of a bummer from my standpoint. I waited too long, but i guess one can't really do the whole "coulda shoulda woulda" game. At any rate, I really liked her, so it's going to be hard to break down the house of illusion I've built.
This has been the latest in a string of misadventures I have flown headfirst into. However, this time around, I at least did something about it and asked her out. At least now I know, and I can lay the whole thing to rest. I guess I'll spend the next few days feeling sorry for myself, along with a mixture of jealousy about the dude she actually is seeing. Erg.
I have to really learn to take the opportunity when I see it.
I do wish that I can put this string of unrequited crushes to rest and find someone who actually likes me as much as i like them. It's not that hard a concept. People do this everyday.
I have a feeling my thought are rather scattered at the moment. I think I should just go to sleep.

8.10.2004

Wireless

I've been thinking about setting up a wireless network in my apartment, but the reviews I've read for the router I like (and works with the Mac) don't give me a whole bunch of confidence.
The easiest solution for me would be to just get the Airport Extreme base station, but that costs about $100 dollars more than this thing, and it doesn't have a 4-port switch that I need to set up my roommate's computer. His computer doesn't have wireless capability, so I figured that the Netgear router would be the best option.
I was going to get the 108Mbps wireless/wired router, but that thing just got hammered in the reviews. It's also allows for faster connection speed. My Mac has 802.11g wireless capability for 54Mbps, but should I ever choose to upgrade, I'd already have the router for it.
I have to keep my eye on the sales at Best Buy and the like, and if I do see a good deal, I may try it. However, those reviews that say that the router loses wireless connectivity kinda sucks.
Ah, but wireless...That's at least two cables I can get rid of. Plus, I can go online on the balcony.

8.09.2004

almost packed

My parents have almost everything packed up from the apartment in princeton. They have maybe one more trip left, and then it's all done. They did a huge move on saturday, while i worked on the bookstore. I drove to the poconos on saturday, and on sunday, my brother and i put the beds together, along with a couple of tables. We also organized the garage.
Tonight, we had a good bye party at the hotel, with a whole bunch of business partners, some of whom i know and most i don't. I don't think it's quite hit me that the day after tomorrow, I have no business being there.I guess that's how it goes.

8.05.2004

I am all agog

For those of you who think living in New Jersey is all glitz and glamour (and frankly, who doesn't?!), us New Jerseyians still have to do the normal people things like buy dish detergent and feed our pets. No, really! Running errands at Target and the like are not foreign tasks for us. When we aren't busy driving our fabulous cars on the fabulous Turnpike to our fabulous jobs an hour away, we still have to do the mundane tasks that keep life flowing smoothly.
As an example, I went to both Target and Shop-rite yesterday to pick up some essentials for the home...

  • I bought dish soap that says it's oxygenated. I have no idea what this means. I guess they put extra oxygen in there for our benefit, which is nice. I'm supposing that this soap is better than those that haven't been oxygenated, but the real test will come when I try it out on my coffee cup. Very excited.
  • The cat food is stocked once again! The cat never knew how close he came to having only three days of food left. Whew!
  • When my roommate left, he took with him a dish draining tray. Where were wet dishes supposed to go to dry off without making the countertop wet? That question was resolved after the purchase of a new dish drainer. Wet dished have a home once more! (You could easily say "why not just dry and put away dishes after you've washed them?" I say doing that completely negates the purpose of having a dish drainer. You look confused.)

After that excitement, who kmows what's in store for me today!

Big Child

Well, the long weeked is over for me, and I really enjoyed being able to visit with all the nieces and nephews, sisters, and brother, not to mention parents. There weren't any major fights that would preclude any future visit, and everyone seemed to get along rather well. Tonight, and in the next few days, people will begin to move in their own general directions, but we have some pictures to remember it all with. My father summed it up pretty well, although morbidly, "The next time we get together like this, it'll probably be for a funeral, and then no one is going to want to take pictures."
On Saturday, we drove up to the Poconos to take a peek at the condo. It's going to be real nice, and the parents are excited about moving up there. Much for them to explore. The close on the house tomorrow, and the moving guys will be there the next day. I think this weekend, we'll be packing a few cars for the last pieces. I think the last day for them in Princeton will be the tenth, and my dad will start in NY on the 11th. They don't mess about in the hotel business. With all the moving and all the kids, my parents had frayed nerves, but once the boxes are unloaded, they'll begin to relax.
I really had a lot of fun with the nieces and nephews. It's going to be great to watch them grow. I don't know my uncles and aunts all that well, nor many of my cousins, but that's not the story for our side here.
I work on Saturday this weekend, which kind of throws me off, but at least i get my full hours. It should be nice having Sunday off, though.
Another note: last week, I sent an email with unsolocited advice to someone. I didn't expect a response at all, but I got one. She seemed to be appreciative of the advice. So that was kinda nice. Made my day. Let me back up a bit...I feel like a punk, or patronizing, ( I think she thinks I am patronizing) when I give unsolicited advice, so I try to watch myself.
So, on with the rest of the week. Bring it on.
